Continue gently pushing the tape under the carpet until it nears the intended destination at the other side of the carpet.

Place another cardboard scrap along the wall where you think the fish tape or undercarpet tape will appear from under the carpet. Push the fish tape until it does appear from under the carpet. Attach the wire to the exposed end of the fish tape or undercarpet tape, pushing the wire through the hole on the end of the tape and securing it with a piece of masking tape. Pull the fish tape back under the carpeting from the starting point; the wire will travel along with it.

Family Handyman says that some wire has a strong adhesive on one side, so it can easily stay in place under carpets. Use a wire or cable slightly longer than you think you'll need, in case the wire doesn't travel in a completely straight line under the carpet.

Flat wire will contribute to the longevity of the carpet and the wire, while rounded wire, if under carpet in a high-traffic area, will eventually wear the carpet out or cause bunching between the carpet and padding. On the end of the fish tape that you just pulled out from under the carpet, there should be a hook which you can attach to your cable.

It may be helpful to use a bit of tape to secure the cable to the end of the fish tape. If you are using a tape measure instead, try using duct tape to attach your cable to the end of the measuring tape. Pull the tape back through the carpet by rewinding the fish tape reel.

This should pull the cable under the carpet along the path that you made using the the fish tape. Do not stop until you have pulled the cable all the way through the desired path. Apply the same method if you're using a tape measure.

Detach the cable from the fish tape. Your cable should now run along your desired path underneath your carpet! You can now hook the cable up as you please. Reattach carpet liner if necessary. If you had to loosen your carpet liner to lift up the carpet, retighten it by hitting it gently with a mallet or hammer.
