They come back from a meeting and it seems that the sleep timer has been reached, the system then doesn't wake up after being prompted, this looks as though it is sending the screen over to the external monitor which isn't connected, when connected back at the dock it doesn't show up and they need to restart the system potentially losing work. I have set the sleep timer to 1 minute on power and this doesn't change the issue it actually continues to stay powered up and awake on battery. Ok, I will submit this case to Microsoft via our channel, please also feedback this situation via Windows 10 built-in Feedback Hub app.
Please remember to mark the replies as answers if they help. If you have feedback for TechNet Subscriber Support, contact tnmff microsoft. I am going to close this thread as the current solution is that there isn't one available in how the OS currently exists so this may require a 3rd party solution if one exists if Microsoft are unable to resolve this in a future release.
So to recap. Power plan doesn't realise that when you disconnect the charger if the lid is currently closed to swap over to the battery power plan. Kernel logs show same ID for AC beign connected or disconnected so there isn't a way of pushing this based on system event's triggering it to enforce specific power plans.
Created new power plan and settings are ignored on each machine. Attempted to force settings via GPO these show the changes but the behaviour still maintains on charge behaviour if lid is closed when power source is removed form the computer. Reset to being controlled by system not GPO, reset power plan options and this is now moving to the sleep timer on some machines not all, this is a big step as it will save them potentially burning the machine out if just putting it into a laptop bag then heading off site.
This might not be the effect you want to get. You might want to close your laptop lid and still use the external monitor. Is it possible to do this? Of course, yes. You can change some settings on your laptop to achieve the aim. The theory is the same as keeping your laptop on when the lid is closed. On the next page, you can see two categories: On battery and Plugged in. Find the When I close the lid The corresponding two categories are set as Sleep by default.
This means that all monitors connected to your laptop will go into sleep mode after you close the laptop lid. To close the laptop lid but still use the external monitor, you need to expand the options for these two categories or just one according to your requirements. This is a much longer process, but it gets the job done.
The trick here is to change your laptop's lid close settings for the power plan it runs on. Here, you would also be able to set customized lid close action for when your laptop is charging or running on a backup battery.
By default, the lid close action for both states are set to Sleep. Step 7: For lid close action while on battery, tap the default action. Then proceed to select a new action from the drop-down menu options. Tap the default lid close action and select a new one from the drop-down menu options. The laptop saves battery power by turning off the screen light but keeps other processes running. That also helps to minimize distractions from your laptop while using a bigger external monitor. This would quickly drain your battery out.
That would cause it to heat up and could damage some electrical components in your laptop. Possibly causing them to stop functioning effectively. If you won't be using your laptop for a couple of hours and you're looking to get more juice out of the battery without shutting it down, setting the lid close action to Hibernate is recommended.
Lid close action should be set to Sleep if you mostly close your laptop for very short periods — say short lunch breaks, coffee breaks, etc. This is because, unlike Hibernate, your device comes back on faster when you open the lid.
Putting your laptop to sleep, however, uses more battery power than hibernating it. Setting your laptop to Shut Down when you close the lid isn't recommended.
You might lose valuable work if you or someone else accidentally close your laptop. The Shut Down lid close action comes in handy as an alternative method of turning off your device.
